The short answer

  • The rule: subtract 3 ft of walking room from each open side of the patio, and the sectional has to fit in what is left.
  • Seats: plan on 20 to 24 inches of seat width per adult, and count seats, not pieces.
  • Shape: an L suits most patios; a U needs roughly a 12 ft by 14 ft space or more.
  • Table gap: keep a coffee table 14 to 18 inches from the seat edge.

What size outdoor sectional do I need? Measure the patio, subtract about 3 ft of walking room from each open side, and choose the sectional that fits the space that is left, usually an L with legs of 5 to 9 ft. Count about 24 inches of seat width per adult to see how many people it seats. To compare real sets by piece count and layout, see outdoor sectionals compared by size, frame and layout.

How do I measure my patio for an outdoor sectional?

Measure the usable floor, not the whole slab. Note the length and width, then subtract what takes room:

  • door swings and steps
  • railings and posts
  • a grill or planters
  • the overhang of a roof or umbrella

The usable rectangle that remains is the number every size below works from. Before you buy, lay painter’s tape in the shape of the sectional, then walk around the outline and open the door.

Measure the doorway too

Outdoor furniture sets arrive in large boxes. Measure the gates and stairs they must pass through, not only the spot where the sectional will sit.

How much walking room do you need around an outdoor sectional?

Plan on about 3 ft (36 inches) of clear floor wherever people walk, a common design guideline for a path that lets someone pass seated guests without turning sideways. Along a wall or railing where nobody walks, you can push the sectional close. Keep the door swing and its 3 ft path clear.

Take the patio dimension, subtract 3 ft for each open walkway, and what remains is the longest the sectional can be in that direction. Worked example: a 12 ft by 12 ft patio with the sectional in one corner, against the house and a railing, has two open ends. Subtract 3 ft from each, and the L can have legs up to 9 ft long.

How many people does an outdoor sectional seat?

Seats are set by length. A common guideline is 20 to 24 inches of seat width per adult: 24 for relaxed lounging, 20 for a snug fit. Divide the length of the seating run by that number.

For an L, the corner is shared, so add both legs and subtract one seat depth first. Worked example: two 7 ft legs are 168 inches; minus about 36 for the shared corner leaves 132, which is 5.5 seats at 24 inches or 6.6 at 20. Call it five or six people.

Piece counts mislead: the Aoxun 7-piece set is six sofa modules and one table. Count the seating pieces.

Allow for cushions that grow

Thick back cushions and pillows eat into seat width. For a large group, size up one module so everyone stays comfortable.

What size outdoor sectional fits each patio size?

Work from the patio down, with the sectional in a corner against two walls or rails and 3 ft of walkway along the two open sides. Seat counts use 20 to 24 inches per person and a roughly 3 ft deep sectional.

Patio Leg length Seats
8x8 ft 5 ft 3-4
10x10 ft 7 ft 5-6
12x12 ft 9 ft 7-9
Under 8x8 ft Loveseat 2-3

Read it as: given a patio this size, use legs up to this long. On the 8 ft patio, 8 minus 3 leaves 5 ft per leg, so 120 inches minus 36 for the corner, divided by 24 or 20, gives 3.5 to 4.2 seats.

Seats by L-shape leg length
5 ft legs3–4 seats
7 ft legs5–6 seats
9 ft legs7–9 seats

A coffee table, side tables and a fire pit all need room beyond the sectional, so if your patio sits at the small end of its size in the table, use an ottoman instead of a table or trim a leg.

Should you choose an L-shaped or U-shaped outdoor sectional?

Choose an L for most patios. It fits a corner, seats a group facing the view or the fire, and leaves open floor behind it. A U wraps around a table so everyone faces each other, a better conversation layout, but it needs a bigger, mostly open area: roughly 12 ft by 14 ft or more, with 3 ft of walkway on the open side.

Modular sectionals make the choice less permanent: the Oasbira set can be arranged as an L or a U, so you can start with an L and extend it later.

How deep should outdoor sectional seats be?

Deeper than indoor seats, usually. Deep-seating outdoor furniture commonly has seats roughly 22 to 28 inches deep, a general design range that suits lounging but takes more floor and is less comfortable for shorter adults sitting upright. Overall depth, arms and back included, is usually about 3 ft or more, so use that when you tape the footprint.

Listings don’t always give seat depth: the Aoxun 8-piece, for example, lists a 25.5 inch seat width and 4 inch cushions, so find the overall depth in the product dimensions before you tape the footprint. Shorter adults can add back pillows to a deep seat.

How far should a coffee table sit from an outdoor sectional?

Leave 14 to 18 inches between the front edge of the seat and the table. That is a common interior design guideline, and it holds outdoors: close enough to reach a drink, far enough to step through. Choose a table at or just below seat height.

What is the standard size of an outdoor sofa?

There is no single standard. A loveseat is commonly about 4.5 to 5 ft long and a three-seat sofa about 6.5 to 7.5 ft, but sectional modules vary by brand. Read the listed dimensions and leave room for the cushions.

What is the 2/3 rule for sofas?

It is an indoor design guideline: a sofa should span about two thirds of the wall it sits against. On a 12 ft wall, a leg of about 8 ft looks balanced and leaves room for a side table.

What should you leave room for besides the sectional?

Good outdoor living space has room for more than the sofa:

  • a deck box or cover, since cushions wear out first
  • a few inches off the wall for airflow
  • space to slide the frame clear when you sweep

Frequently asked questions

What size outdoor sectional do I need for a small patio?

On a patio about 8 ft by 8 ft, an L with legs of about 5 ft each fits with 3 ft of walking room on the open sides. It seats three or four adults. Below that size, choose a loveseat plus a chair instead.

How big should an outdoor sectional be?

Big enough to seat your usual group at 20 to 24 inches per person, and small enough to leave about 3 ft of walking room around it. Measure the patio, subtract the walkways, and fit the sectional into the remainder.

How far should a coffee table be from an outdoor sectional?

Common design guidance is 14 to 18 inches between the seat edge and the table, close enough to reach a drink and far enough to step through.

What is the standard size of an outdoor sofa?

There is no single standard. A loveseat is commonly about 4.5 to 5 ft long and a three-seat sofa about 6.5 to 7.5 ft, while sectional modules are sold in sizes that vary by brand, so check each listing.

Is an L-shaped or U-shaped outdoor sectional better?

An L is better for most patios because it fits a corner and leaves open floor. A U seats more people facing each other but needs a larger, mostly open space.
